Stephanie Baron

Stephanie Baron working in her studio among large paintings laid across the floor.

Stephanie Baron is a self-taught mixed media artist based in Vermont. Working on paper and canvas, she explores the emotional lives of women through gesture, posture, colour and layered marks. Her figures hold strength and softness together, leaving space for personal interpretation.

The body speaks first

On her website, Stephanie writes, “I’ve always watched how women carry emotion.” That attention is at the heart of her work.

The way a body leans, says everything words cannot.

Her women are not society’s ideal. They are restless, quiet and human. A curve, an unfinished line or a figure emerging from abstraction offers a point of recognition.

A way back to herself

Drawing was an early place of honesty for Stephanie, somewhere she could express what she felt without having to be guarded. After years away from a sustained practice, she returned to making art as a way of reconnecting with herself as she entered some scary chapters of life...

She began painting seriously in a small closet and women kept appearing.. so she followed them.

It became both exploration and a mirror. A practice of looking closely, allowing vulnerability, and discovering that softness never diminish strength.

Marks that remain

Stephanie’s materials are part of that conversation. Handmade paper, canvas, charcoal, ink and paint offer different ways to hold a gesture. Torn edges, texture and visible marks remain part of the work, rather than something to conceal. Across small paper works and larger paintings, the surface carries its own history.

Her process is intuitive and responsive to life, fed by music, conversation and the experience of being human. The work leaves room for contradiction: quiet and unruly.

Art to live with

Stephanie hopes the people who bring her paintings home will regard them as companions, familiar presences that can witness a day without asking anyone to perform. The relationship is personal, and it can deepen over time.
